Inuit Lament

Designed for an exhibition in Taiwan on environmental concerns regarding water pollution.

It is a sad commentary that the traditional livelihood of the Inuit, based on an abiding respect for natural ecosystems, is threatened most by the effects of non-indigenous pollution. Sensitive arctic marine ecosystems are at risk from the dumping of oil spills, nuclear waste and heavy metal contamination.

This quilt was inspired by a photograph from the McCord Gallery collection entitled “Inuit man” by Bob Stewart, 1920-21 in Port Harrison, Quebec. It features cheesecloth manipulated with PVA adhesive and stitched onto painted buckram, with linen appliqués. Free-motion quilted using monofilament and cotton threads.
